6. SMART Visa

Thailand has been making a series of efforts in driving the economy through innovation. The Thai Government has taken another step to attract talents and technologies with a view to further developing its targeted industries or the so called S-Curve industries. The SMART Visa program has then been designed to enhance Thailand’s attractiveness in drawing science and technology experts, senior executives, investors and startups.

The SMART Visa is a new type of visa specially designed to encourage highly-skilled professionals and talents to work or invest in the 10 targeted S-Curve industries, namely (1) next-generation automotive, (2) smart electronics, (3) affluent, medical and wellness tourism, (4) agriculture and biotechnology, (5) food for the future, (6) robotics, (7) aviation and logistics, (8) biofuels and biochemicals, (9) digital, and (10) medical hub.

The four categories of people who are eligible to apply for SMART Visa are (1) Talent (2) Investor (3) Executive (4) Startup and (5) Others (i.e. legal dependents, namely spouse and children, if any).

The SMART Visa provides more benefits and privileges as follows:
(1) Visa validity up to 4 years (instead of the usual 1 year)
(2) No requirement of work permit
(3) Extension of reporting of stay to Immigration Bureau – from every 90-day to every year
(4) The right of legal dependents (spouse and children) of the SMART Visa holder to live and work in Thailand equivalent to SMART visa holder (only SMART T type allows dependents of SMART Visa holder to work in Thailand).

If you are a national of the following countries : Algeria, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Central Africa, China (PRC), Congo (Democratic Republic of), Congo (Republic of), Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Guinea, India, Iran, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Yemen and other African countries (except Morocco and Tunisia), besides documents stated above, you are required Residence Permit in Italy, Albania, or Cyprus and Penal Record Certificate from Italy, Albania, or Cyprus, all in 3 copies. Other nationals, not entitled to visa exemption and not on the above list, may apply for visa at the Royal Thai Honorary Consulate-General in Genoa, Milan, Naples, Turin or Consulate in Venice as long as they have the residence permit in Italy or at the Royal Thai Honorary Consulate-General in Nicosia or Consulate in Tirana as long as they have residence permit in Cyprus or Albania respectively. Without residence permits, they are required to apply at the Royal Thai Embassy in Rome.

Important Notes :
  • Visa issuance usually takes 3 working days. There is no express service to expedite visa process. Any excuses by applicants will not be considered.
  • Nationals who are entitled to 30-day visa exemption are allowed to enter Thailand through land border checkpoints no more than twice per calendar year (1 January – 31 December). This does not affect entries through international airports.
  • For a transit period of no more than 12 hours within the same airport, one does not need a visa. For a transit period of more than 12 hours either at the same or different airports, a transit visa is required.
  • Passports that are legitimate for Thai visa issuance must be at least 6-month valid, issued by competent authorities of foreign governments and recognized international organizations only and contain at least 2 unused visa pages.
  • Period and extension of stay are subject to the consideration of Immigration Officers.
  • Visa Validity is different from Period of Stay. Visa Validity is a period within which one can enter to Thailand using the issued visa (before the visa expires) whereas Period of Stay is the period within which an Immigration Officer allows one to stay in Thailand. Always check your allowed period of stay after going through Immigration.
  • The above requirements apply to holders of ordinary passports only. For official or diplomatic passports, please contact the Embassy.
  • The consular officer may ask for additional documents or proofs if deemed necessary and reserves the right to refuse visa.
